When your child comes out, you want to respond well. As a family therapist, here's what I tell parents. It is not your fault, your child will be safe, forgive yourself for your responses. When a child comes out as gay or lesbian, it's hard to know how to respond. But how you respond isn't as important as what you do next. What should you do if your child comes out to you as LGBTQ+?

I ended up getting sent to a therapist who was tasked with telling my parents whether I was gay or not. Participants articulated that transphobia was not unique to legal systems or processes, but was a deep-rooted structural and societal issue that continued to follow participants into the legal system. Participants thus experienced a range of long-lasting professional, financial, social, and mental health impacts as a result of their legal problems and attempts to access justice through legal systems, which negatively contributed to their quality of life.
